Doctor WHO News in Brief Added on 9 March, 2003
To celebrate the new series of one of the most groundbreaking television programmes of recent years - 24 - the new issue of the Radio Times has compiled a list of the most important TV shows from the last five decades. In order to compile the list, Radio Times interviewed a broad range of TV industry experts including controllers, producers and writers. Pioneering shows such as Coronation Street, Life On Earth and The Simpsons all make the list due to the ingenuity of creators Tony Warren, David Attenborough, and Matt Groening. Radio Times says programmes such as Doctor Who - which not only spawned US copies such as Star Trek - also had a greater influence on UK audiences than any other programme of its genre. A new article (24th February) written by columnist Darren Walters spoke with Producer Charles Armitage, of Noel Gay films, who is currently heading up the effort to get Red Dwarf to the big-screen. As a point of comparison, the article also mentions the trouble-laden plans to launch motion pictures based on Doctor WHO and the Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. When asked about the problems that have plagued Doctor WHO and Hitch-hiker's Guide, Mr Armitage said the following: "There is quite a big difference between Dr Who and Red Dwarf... Dr Who has a loyal fan base which has been around for a long time... The fans of Dr Who, and I might be wrong here, seem to me to be getting older." And, for those of you who still wanna know, the article states flatly that Doctor who "is no closer to being turned into a movie." To read the entire article, please visit BBC News
