Doctor number two:

PERSONALITY: Totally different in attitude from his original incarnation, the second Doctor was a small, clownish figure, who often danced happy jigs while plaing a tune on his recorder(flute). Though he often seemed as terrified of the monsters he encountered as his companions, the second Doctor was nonetheless a sly combatant of evil, who oft times played the fool in order to trick his foes into underestimating him. It was a ploy that served him well.

QUOTE: "Not allowed? Me? I'm allowed everywhere!"

STORIES: 21, from The Power of the Daleks through The War Games.

MILESTONES: Power of the Daleks: Establishes the new Doctor's personality. The Highlanders: Introduces Jamie McCrimmon, the longest running companion to date. The Ice Warriors:Introduces the Ice warriors (How's ya guess?). The Web of Fear: Lethbridge Stewart and the men of U.N.I.T. debut here. The War Games: Finally reveals the Doctor's home planet of Gallifrey, and the Time Lords. The Doctor is forcefully regenerated, and exiled to earth with his knowledge of TARDIS travel theory blocked.

My Thoughts: I have yet to see much of the Second Doctor, as much of his tenure ranks among the missing portions of Doctor who film posterity. Although amusing, Patrick Troughton's interpretation of the Doctor is not my favorite, but nor is it disliked. To really give a true interpretation I need to see "Tomb of the Cybermen", which is supposedly one of his finest stories. My recent purchace of "Invasion" helped me get a better look at his Doctor, and it was favorable. Patrick Troughton died somewhat suddenly on March 28, 1987, suffering a fatal heart attack while staying in Columbus, Georgia for a convention. He was 67 years old. It is indeed a real shame that most of his performances of the Doctor have been lost, perhaps forever.

Best Companion(s): Though I would prefer to have written about Zoe Herriot and Jamie McCrimmon (whom I consider the 2nd Doctor's definitive companions.), I will instead write about his first companions, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright because they were the first compainions to transition between 2 Doctors. They had joined the first Doctor, and witnessed his incredible regeneration at the conclusion of their defeat of the Cybermen in "The Tenth Planet". They were shocked and surprised at the Doctor's radical change in appearance and attitude, but acclimated to him quickly. Ben was an able seaman. Tough, solid and down-to-earth. He was a formidable boxer, and was able to do most anything nesseccary to make due, such as cooking and sewing, in true Navy fashion. His cockney accent was quite distinctive, and though of slow temperament, any jabs taken at the accent were sure to annoy him. He bore a slight resentment towards the Doctor for whisking him away in the TARDIS, and towards Polly for getting him into the situation in the first place. Polly was Ben's complete polar opposite. She was a society girl, a secretary, and dressed in Fab clothes and was accomplished at screaming loud enough to bring Ben running to her rescue. She was a fun-loving type, who enjoyed picking at Ben, who reciprocated the teasing. It was obvious to all involved that they had great affection towards one another, and not-surprisingly, she and Ben left together in their own era, deciding to remain on earth in 1966.
