The First Doctor:

PERSONALITY: The first Doctor is best described as somewhat ill-tempered, and cranky. He seemingly had very little patience for the failings and the limited knowledge of ordinary humans. At times he seemed to be willing to place his companions into dangerous situations in order to satisfy his own curiosity. Nonetheless, the first Doctor cared greatly for his companions, and would never fail to act upon evil or injustice.

QUOTE: "That is the dematerializing control. And that, over yonder, is the horizontal hold. Up there is the scanner, those are the doors, that is a chair with a panda on it. Sheer poetry, dear boy. Now please stop bothering me."

STORIES: 29, from An Unearthly Child through The Tenth Planet.

MILESTONES: An Unearthly Child: Very first episode. Introduces the his granddaughter Susan, his first companions, and the TARDIS. The Daleks:Introduces the program's most popular villians to date. The Dalek Master Plan: The longest running single story in the show's history, spanning 12 episodes. Also features the first deaths involving the Doctor's companions. The Tenth Planet: Introduces the Cybermen, and the Doctor regenerates for the first time.

My Thoughts: I did not become acquainted with William Hartnell's incarnation of the Doctor till the mid 80's. At first I did not really care for him, but he grew on me. His temperamental, Irascible attitude grated on me, but later became part of his charm. William Hartnell must be respected, for his Doctor is what cemented the Show's success. His grand fatherly incarnation of the Doctor appealed to children strongly and made them feel a bit safer. William Hartnell passed away in 1975 and has been greatly missed. The role of the 1st Doctor was later reprised by actor Richard Hurndall for "The Five Doctors". Hurndall did a marvelous job, capturing the role of Hartnell's Doctor almost flawlessy. Sadly he too passed away in recent years.

Best Companion(s): By far the best Companions of the First Doctor, were the show's original trio, Susan , Ian Chesterson, and Barbara Wright. Susan was Gallifreyan, like the Doctor and she referred to him as her 'Grandfather'. She had Piqued the curiosity of her teachers, Ian and Barbara, due to her formidable intelligence. Realizing there was more to her than met the eye, they tried to visit her address, finding only a Junkyard on Totter's Lane. History was made when, in a fit of pique, the Doctor set the TARDIS traveling into the distant past. Susan was often the typical rebellious teenager, despite her intelligence, and remained with the Doctor until she met the Freedom Fighter, David Campbell with whom she fell in love. After defeating the Daleks, she remained with him there in earth's future. Ian was the School's Science teacher, whom quickly found a life full of discovery and peril with the Doctor. He was quick-witted, often skeptical, and reluctantly heroic. He often found himself in argumentative conflicts with the Doctor due to the old Time-Lord's stubborn ways. Barbara toaught History and English at Coal Hill school, and opened more quickly to the Doctor and the reality of Temporal Physics. She was passionate, romantic, and a peacemaker who oft-times settled arguments among the TARDIS crew or at least quelled them. In fact it was Barbara who deduced that the TARDIS was plunging headlong towards its obliteration in the 3rd Doctor Who story, "Edge of Destruction". As Ian and Barbara arrived together, so too they left together, returning to their own time in London. Thus closed the first era of companions of the Doctor.
